Get Skirty

The other day I witnessed a traffic stopping incident. Technically I was already stopped at the lights, but I would have definitely slowed down to a crawl had I not already been stationary, so I could gawk (stylishly) from behind large, dark sunglasses. What caused this traffic stopper (aside from the red light)? In a word, fashion.

Specifically? A blue and white French style striped tee, gold and white spotted a-line skirt, cleverly knotted leather belt, and a jaunty high ponytail.

The gal sporting this attire looked 100% 50s movie star fab, and in line with the current weather – she had a real ‘spring’ in her step (sorry, pun quota). Which may have been on account of her excellent ensemble or due to the handsome gentleman waiting at the lights on the footpath next to her trying to score a date via a spirited performance of tricky push bike maneuvers (otherwise known as showing off). I felt a spring in my step for her – the outfit was working on such a high level she was being asked out. In broad daylight. At a set of completely unromantic traffic lights. In front of about 87 cars. It’s practically a highway. Kudos to the gentleman in question, he had game – traffic is particularly hard to cue romantic music over, should he have wanted to set his romantic overtures to a soundtrack.

Back to the ensemble, the overall look was cute, but the key was The Skirt. It pulled the whole look together. And this season it’s all about The Skirt. A-line, circle, and pencil skirts. The whole geometry set of skirts is in. And it’s about time. Anyone else sick of skinny jeans? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not breaking up with them permanently. We’re just on a “break”. I’m sure we’ll get back together at the first cold nip in the air; I’m easy like that.

Skirts are always a good Spring go-to but the a-line, circle, and pencil varietals haven’t been in for a while. Tube skirts, maxis, and minis have all been on high rotation. In fact, unless you have access to the fashion vaults of Paramount Pictures when these skirts were first in (think Grace Kelly in the 1954 flick Rear Window. If you haven’t seen it, just watch and learn. That’s how fashion is done.) these geometry set styles may warrant a twirl to the shops or atleast the virtual stores; I just picked up a black and white striped mid-calf a-line from shopbop.com (on sale, so practically free), which has already hit the town with a pair of strappy heels and a killer Zoe Karssen tee (which may be sold out. Worldwide. Sorry. I’m addicted. On the plus side, it’s better than an addiction to say, crystal meth). Country Road, Witchery, net-a-porter.com, and saksfifthavenue.com are all doing excellent work in skirts. Plus not only do these skirt styles pair perfectly with heels, they also go super well with flats: ballet or sandals.

Here are some skirt style ideas to get you started…
